The New York Times (NYT) is set to release an AR app that will allow future issues of the newspaper to include AR enhanced articles.
The publication said in a statement that it wants to use the technology to extend “stories beyond the inches of a screen, by digitally adding objects into your space at real scale.”
The company said that AR can give those digital objects “provocative explanatory value, because you can get close to them.”
The NYT announcement comes less than a month after TIME released an AR issue, which allowed readers to access a range of additional content using their phones, including behind the scenes video, infographics and animations.
Many news organisations and media outlets have been talking about the potential power of AR to enhance the journalistic experience by moving images and events from the abstract nature of a photograph to an interactive experience in recent months.
Future of storytelling
At the moment, the app is limited to allowing users to call forth an AR newspaper vending using the camera of their iPhone or iPad. This is more likely an exercise in getting users used to the idea of using their cameras to interact with content.
Users can interact with the vending machine, move around it and place it on different objects.
The real fun begins this week, when an issue of the NYT will be released with an AR article about the incoming Winter Olympics. The app will allow users to see the athletes featured in the article in 3D from a range of different angles.
The publication says the move is part of its effort to “lean towards the future of storytelling”.
